Success- PHL Formula

Preparation
If you want to succeed prepare well, the different between being successful and failing is preparation. Preparation increases self-confidence.
Practice, practice, and more practice that is a critical part of the preparation process which leads to a successful pathway to achieving self-confidence. “Men give me credit for genius, but all the genius I have lies in this: when I have a subject to hand, I study it profoundly” said Alexander Hamilton a founding father of the United States.

Hard Work
The good thing about working hard is, that for people who are driven towards their goal can enjoy their hard work and consequently, the work does not seem unduly grueling to them. When you begin to work hard towards achieving success, make sure to work smartly too. An intelligent working technique, along with relentless effort will go a long way in helping you achieve the success that you always desired.
Therefore, you need to remember that there are no short cuts to success. Hard work, complimented with an intense desire to struggle and to achieve success is the only sure shot way of reaching success that you have always wanted.

Learning from Failures
Failure is not always bad. In life it is sometimes bad, sometimes inevitable, and sometimes even good. Failure and fault are virtually inseparable in most households, organizations, and cultures. Every child learns at some point that admitting failure means taking the blame. But taking the blame does not mean being a failure. Failing is a learning process… it is an indication of learning. Every failure comes with a tag that says…. Correct yourself. We got to respect that, learn  and  move on.

True story: Real Winners Don’t Give Up!

This is a true story of a young woman who went through the most gruesome fire. When you read her story, you’ll realize that your trials are absolutely nothing compared to what this young girl went through.
It was September 25, 2000. Maricel Apatan was an 11-year old girl in Zamboanga. On that day, this little girl went with her uncle to draw water.
Along the way, four men met them. They were carrying long knives. They told her uncle to face down on the ground, and they hacked him on the neck and killed him.
Maricel was in total shock, especially that the men were their neighbors. She tried to escape, but the men ran after her.
She cried, “Kuya, ‘wag po, ‘wag n’yo akong tagain! Maawa po kayo sa akin!” (“Don’t kill me! Have mercy on me!”)
But they weren’t listening. With a long knife, a man slashed her on the neck too.
Maricel fell to the ground and lost consciousness.
When she woke up, she saw a lot of blood. She also saw the feet of the men around her, but she pretended to be dead.
When they walked away, Maricel ran back home. But along the way, she saw that both her hands were falling off. Because the men hacked them too. She cried but she kept running.
Sometimes, she would faint and fall to the ground. But she’d regain consciousness and run again.
When she was near her home, Maricel called her mother.
Upon seeing her daughter, her mother screamed in terror. She wrapped her bloodied child in a blanket and carried her to the hospital.
Here was the problem: From her house to the highway, it was a 12-kilometer walk. It took them 4 hours just to reach the highway.
When they arrived in the hospital, the doctors thought Maricel was going to die. But for 5 hours, they operated on her. It took 25 stitches to stitch together the long knife wound in her neck and back.
Maricel barely survived. And she lost both of her hands.
Ironically, the next day was Maricel’s birthday. She was 12 years old. But tragedy didn’t end there. When they went home, they saw their home was gone. It was ransacked and burned down by the goons.
Being very poor, Maricel’s family also didn’t have P50,000 for their hospital bills.
But God sent many angels along the way to help them.
Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, a distant relative, paid for hospital bills and helped them bring the criminals to court. They were sentenced to prison.
Today, she’s staying with the nuns at Regina Rosariiwith Sr. Eppie Brasil, O.P.
But this is the incredible miracle. Instead of staying down, Maricel kept running. Instead of cursing God why she had no hands, she now uses her wrists in incredible ways that will boggle your mind.
Maricel was cited as the most industrious, best in computer, and most courteous in the School for Crippled Children.
In 2008, she graduated from a course in Hotel and Restaurant Management. She even received a Gold medal for Arts and Crafts.
In 2011, she finished her education to be a chef. Yes, a Chef without hands. Nothing can stop this young lady from reaching her dreams.

Old Ways won't Open New Doors...!!

Old Ways won't Open New Doors...!!

"If you want to achieve something that you haven't achieved till date, you will have to do things you haven't done till date."
It's not necessary that whatever got you till here will take you ahead. Most of us miss this. Times change, people change, situations also change. It's quintessential that you too change your thought process and strategies as per the changing times.
It's easier and comfortable to continue to do things in a typical manner which you have been following for ages. But of course a ball played on the offside will be on the same side unless you take the efforts to kick it towards the on side. It ain't going that way on its own.
The goal is not reachable 'cos it's comfortable. Get out, try new ways, innovate, discover.... And you will find out a whole new route that takes you to your goals....!!!!

Tips on Managing People

The Right Way to Give a Critique

The worst thing you can do if you want to get somebody to listen to you is to criticize him or her.

As human beings, we hate being criticized. When attacked we attack back.

And we attack even when we are in the wrong. Right or wrong has nothing to do with it.

Many of us fall into the trap of thinking, “I know I am right, so I’m going to tell the others how silly they are!” It’s tempting, but it doesn’t work.

If you have the self-control and the presence of mind to put aside the needs of your own ego and say, “I’ve got a problem. Will you help me?” you are much more likely to get cooperation from the other person.

The Only Way to Get Anybody to Do Anything

If you want to get something from another human being, you must first do something for them. In other words, you can’t win influence unless you first invest in the relationship.

So before you need something from someone, make it your business to at least get to know them without making any demands. This doesn’t mean invading their privacy but it does mean making the relationship personal. For example, I have learned that I should take my assistant out to lunch occasionally.

This is not something I am naturally disposed to do, but unless I show an interest in her as a human being the relationship won’t work. (I still don’t do it as often as I should!)

If the only time she hears from me is when I want something, then she will form a kind of resistance.

You Are There to Help

If someone comes in to criticize us or get us to raise our game, under what circumstances would we accept that person’s critique?

That’s easy. If I think someone is really trying to help me then I’ll listen, I’ll engage. On the other hand, if I think someone is just trying to get the job done or make himself or herself look good, I may listen because I need to keep my job, but my heart won’t be in it. My creative energies will be depleted.

So the bad news is that you will only have influence over people to the extent that they think you are sincerely trying to help them. It’s not a moral point. It’s simply how human beings work.

The most influential managers are those who can be convincing to other people that they care about them as people.

Team Players

The most common prima donnas are people who don’t want to be team players at all. If they throw a fit about something, they are not really talking about anything specific: they just don’t want to have to fit in with others.

If one person won’t fit in, the minute you are seen to tolerate their behavior, to tolerate an exception, you as the leader have just given permission to everybody else to do things their own way, too.

You are better off without a prima donna if their actions ruin the teamwork of the whole group. If you want the benefits of collaboration you cannot afford to make exceptions.

Getting the Task Done

Each time you have an interaction with someone there are two things going on: one deals with the immediate topic, getting the task done, and the second is the way in which every interaction affects your relationship with your colleague. It will be advanced, ruined or left neutral.

Bear in mind that you should not sacrifice the task to the relationship. Similarly, just winning on the task is not good if you have ruined your relationship. You’ve got to do well on both counts.

There is a certain way of saying things. Instead of saying, “You are wrong,” you must learn to say, “Might there be another way of looking at this?”

It’s about helping the other person save face. And the only way to get anybody to do anything is to make them want to do it. Some people are naturally good at these diplomatic human relations. Sadly, many of us have to learn these skills.

I have pretty much every business degree that the planet has to offer, but no one ever taught me about managing people. That skill I had to learn by trial and error. So for many of us it’s a good idea to mentally rehearse our phraseology before we go into a meeting.

Don’t Be Paternal/Maternal

There is another trap to avoid. When you are giving feedback to an employee, it is easy to come across as paternal or maternal. Nothing will raise someone’s hackles more than being treated like a child.

So, as an exercise, imagine you are going in to give the same critique to your mother or father. Turn it around and respectfully help “Dad” arrive at the right conclusion for himself.

The Domineering Boss

There is a natural temptation for people in charge to say, “This is how I deal with people—like it or lump it.” But if you want to influence others, then it’s about what turns them on, not what turns you on.

On the other hand, there are bad managers who are so good at relating to people that they never actually get the job done. They are too soft and caring to inspire hard work and positive energy.

No Two People Are the Same

You don’t influence everybody the same way. People do things for their own reasons—not for yours. So if you want to inspire someone, you don’t give him or her some wonderful company vision.

Instead, you help them see what’s in it for them. That varies from person to person. Some people are motivated by challenge, some by money and some by the social opportunities afforded by a project.

It’s about reading the other person, finding their hot button, not yours.

Interest in People

To be a good manager or team leader you have to have an above-average interest in people. If you are not very interested in people that doesn’t make you a bad person, but you are going to have to work hard to overcome that if you want to be a successful manager.

It’s also about laying down challenges, getting people to stretch themselves creatively and getting people excited about your ideas rather than seeing those ideas as stressful demands.

The best group leaders see themselves as catalysts. They like to accomplish a great deal but understand that they can do little without the combined efforts of others.

A good manager does not see himself as the “people’s boss” but as the leader of a cohesive team of autonomous, creative individuals.

PUT THE GLASS DOWN TODAY!

Read this small story; Hope that makes a BIG change in YOU
The Professor began his class by holding up a glass with some water in it. He held it up for all to see & asked the students “How much do you think this glass weighs?"
'50gms!'..... '100gms!' .....'125gms' ...the students answered.
"I really don't know unless I weigh it," said the professor, "but, my question is:
What would happen if I held it up like this for a few minutes?"
'Nothing' …..the students said.
'Ok what would happen if I held it up like this for an hour?' the professor asked.
'Your arm would begin to ache' said one of the student
"You're right, now what would happen if I held it for a day?"
"Your arm could go numb; you might have severe muscle stress & paralysis & have to go to hospital for sure!"
….. Ventured another student & all the students laughed
"Very good.
But during all this, did the weight of the glass change?" Asked the professor.
'No'…. Was the answer.
"Then what caused the arm ache & the muscle stress?"
The students were puzzled.
"What should I do now to come out of pain?" asked professor again.
"Put the glass down!" said one of the students
"Exactly!" said the professor.
Life's problems are something like this.
Hold it for a few minutes in your head & they seem OK.
Think of them for a long time & they begin to ache.
Hold it even longer & they begin to paralyze you. You will not be able to do anything.

It's important to think of the challenges or problems in your life, But EVEN MORE IMPORTANT is to 'PUT THEM DOWN' at the end of every day before you go to sleep...
That way, you are not stressed, you wake up every day fresh &strong & can handle any issue, any challenge that comes your way!

So, when you start your day today, Remember friend to ‘PUT THE GLASS DOWN TODAY! '

7 Steps to Discovering Your Passion

Even before the first tip, you simply must get out a notebook, journal, piece of paper, napkin...SOMETHING to write on to save your discoveries! These tips will only help if you pursue them, so please either take a moment to find writing tools NOW or print this out and promise yourself to complete this exercise later. It may take you some thinking time to get it done......and now....here are your tips.....

1. Find Your Joy Factor Look at the whole of your life history. When did you experience the most sustained period of Joy? What were you doing then? Where were you? Who were you with? How did it feel?

2. What Are Your 3 Most Favorite things to do? If you had a free day with NO commitments, where would you be found? What would you be doing with whom?

3. In what area do you excel? (NO MODESTY ALLOWED HERE!)Truly, what are you complimented on a lot? This could be ANYTHING.

4. What do you most want to be remembered for? If you were designing your epitaph, what would you want it to say? (NOT what your Mom wants, or your SPOUSE wants or your third cousin twice removed, but what do YOU want your headstone to say?)

5. If you had a magic wand, what would you change about your life TODAY? How would it look compared to how it looks now? Which aspects of your life ARE changeable, both short term and long term?

6. How does your Joy factor overlap with your favorite things and the areas in which you excel? Do the areas in which you excel bring YOU joy, or are they really for someone else.....do you see which are obvious matches, and which do not fit? Those that overlap, that bring YOU the most Joy, are most likely the things that would bring you into Passionate Living.

7. What is the first even teeny tiny step you can take to living out your Passion as you have defined in #6? Take some time to really think this one through... concentrate and focus, and then you will be able to start the next step...BUILDING YOUR ROADMAP.

Choose your team carefully, turn your team members on and keep them happy by taking great care of them.

“People are made up of 99% emotion and 1% reason. Take care of their hearts and their heads will follow”

Joy Madison

You arrive at work and turn on the machines – they work away day-in and day-out, producing a fixed quantity at a fixed quality. If they break down, it is simple to trace the problem and fix it. When your machines are old and fully depreciated, you simply replace them with new and improved models.

Your people are totally different – they can be complex, moody, temperamental, unpredictable and often secretive and insecure. They are known to report late, steal, break things, strike, sulk or just go slow. That’s just the way it is. And often it has a lot to do with the way you treat them.

On the other hand, you will have people who treat the business as if it is their own, work overtime, care, smile, go the extra mile and dedicate themselves to excellence. These are your stars. When you are lucky enough to get these people, do whatever it takes to keep them, motivate them and reward them. Give these stars all the recognition in the world, stroke them, massage their egos, boost their pay cheques – they are the reason why your business will thrive. Without them, you’re deadmeat – we just can’t say it any simpler than that.

Business-Its a promise, that at least 80% of the problems your business will face will be people related.

One of the defining qualities of great entrepreneurs is their ability to spot and hire the right people — often they work on gut feel. But they back up their gut feel by checking out these people with great care. No-one can give you gut feel, but we can give you some tips on how to check out your most important assets:

* Check references — don’t only check the references given to you, because these people were probably pre-conditioned. Phone and check references not supplied. When you check a reference, be prepared by having a well thought out series of questions you would like answered.
* Consider conducting psychometric or personality tests — These tests are readily available and they are inexpensive. One well- known entrepreneur with whom we have worked even puts all her potential staff and franchisees through a handwriting analysis. When we asked her why, she said it was because she had her own handwriting analyzed and was amazed at how accurate it was.
* Match the personality and culture of the candidate to that of your company — A company is like an extended family to its staff. It is a group of people who behave in a certain way; they have certain beliefs, values and desires; and they live with each other at least eight hours a day. Inother words, every company, no matter how small, has its own culture. Some people may fit in and others won’t. Some people might have all the technical skills but they won’t fit into your company. It is therefore vital to try matching the potential employee’s personality to the personality of your company.
* Master the art of interviewing — The job interview is the most important meeting you will ever have with your employee. It’s where you ultimately decide whether you are going to build a relationship with this person or not. It’s almost like deciding whether you want to marry someone after one meeting. We recommend that you have other staff members interview job candidates. Get a second, third and fourth opinion. And decide on
* what kind of questions you are going to ask the candidate before the interview. Remember: in this country, once you hire someone, it could be for keeps.
* Give the candidate an assignment — One of the most effective ways to choose the right people is to ask them to prepare an assignment or presentation for presentation to you at a second interview. In this way, you will get an actual taste of what this person can do. In effect, you are asking the person to pitch for the job the way you pitch for your customer’s accounts.

Warning:

Small companies often fail to do the basics because they don’t have the resources of a big company. We find that these smaller operations often don’t bother with letters of appointment, leave registers, grievance procedures and other legal and procedural aspects. However, they are not above labour legislation. In fact, smaller companies have to take special care in legalities, since they do not have large in-house legal departments to handle any queries and cases that may come up. As we all know, legal fees alone can bankrupt you. So avoid landing yourself in legal disputes by handling human resources in a professional way.
